This is a typical sex exploitation film from the early 1930s - complete with wild parties, sex out of wedlock, lesbianism, etc. A chorus girl's exposure to the "casting couch" also exposes her to syphilis. Exploitation filmmakers hoped to capitalize on the taboo subjects of venereal disease, sex before marriage, lesbianism, etc. while skirting the Motion Picture Production Code of 1930 which forbade a film from containing such content. Films like this would tour the United States for...

It’s Joshua’s last day in Harlem before leaving for a college in Texas where he has earned a track and field scholarship. He runs joyfully through New York’s central park but his joy ends when he is the victim of a racial slur uttered by a five year old boy that he had befriended. Later, on his way home Joshua is able to work out his anger during a fight with a boy his age. The confrontation releases Joshua’s frustration and after the fight , in a dramatic scene Joshua is able to fly a...

This PSSC film utilizes a fascinating set consisting of a rotating table and furniture occupying surprisingly unpredictable spots within the viewing area. The fine cinematography by Abraham Morochnik, and funny narration by University of Toronto professors Donald Ivey and Patterson Hume is a wonderful example of the fun a creative team of filmmakers can have with a subject that other, less imaginative types might find pedestrian.

The late Gerald McDermott made this, his first commercial film at the age of 19, an extremely complex animation short featuring approximately 2000 animation cels presented in six minutes. The production was handled by an uncredited Harrison Engle, later noted as a documentary filmmaker. Influenced by Klee and Matisse, McDermott used silk-screen as well as traditional painting techniques in crafting ethnographic folk tale animation shorts. With films that are startling in intensity, and majestic...

The film takes place in a WWI trench, where five diverse individuals have been unwillingly thrust together. Despising one another at first, the five protagonists come to realize that they must learn to get along if they hope to survive. The pacifistic sentiments (not to mention the ethnic mix) of Niemansland would be verboten by the Nazi regime within a few years after its original 1931 release; indeed, all copies of this film were ordered to be destroyed by propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels.

A parable about the consequences of being a bystander to evil, from a disturbing poem by Maurice Ogden, read by Herschel Bernardi. Shadows and shifting geometric planes lend a Chirico-like quality to Julian's animation. Great musical score by Serge Hovey. About the film, Steve Goldman writes: "Les Goldman was my father. Creating this film was one of the most important accomplishments of his life. He was inspired to make this film after hearing the poem 'Hangman' read on Pacifica Radio in...

This is the original footage from the documentary Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism , produced and directed by Robert Greenwald. The film, which has drawn attention for its pointed critique of Fox News, consists largely of interviews with former Fox employees and news guests. Greenwald said, In making Outfoxed, I learned how cumbersome and expensive it can be to license footage from news organizations. The Creative Commons license, as used here, allows me as a filmmaker to know...

An Inquiry into Meaning and Truth examines the relation between our language and the world. Russell talks about the hierarchy of empirical knowledge, consisting of the facts, observed or unobserved, the basic propositions, and the inferred propositions. On the epistemological side he is a foundationalist. The reason to believe any empirical sentence is one or more other sentences, we already believe, "or some non-linguistic occurrence having a certain relation to the sentence...

376. NOAM CHOMSKY SPEAKS OUT! America's outstanding radical intellectual, Chomsky discusses the ideological war waged by the Reagan administration against the American people, particularly within the framework of the situations in El Salvador and Nicaragua. He also evaluates the complicity of the mass media in these efforts. Chomsky maintains that because of widespread opposition to its policies, the Reagan administration regarded the US population as enemy territory, and had to resort to...

Noam Chomsky's 1967 essay "The Responsibilty of Intellectuals" challenged status quo thinking on the Vietnam War, and offered an analysis of ideological presumptions which has held true ever since. Here is a real-life example of Chomsky's points, as appeared during the first Gulf War. The original essay can be found at www.chomsky.info
